Anabantoidei are a group of fish who have the ability to breathe and utilize the oxygen in the air-as well as in the water.
They do this through a specialized lung like organ called the Labyrinth organ. This has evolved in fish that are naturally found in Asia living in oligotrophic environments. These include the betta splendens (Siamese fighting fish) that are found in rice patties.
These fish are able to live for up to hours outside of the water purely breathing air this organ largely attributes to their survival in the wild.
